How Storytelling and Connection Drive Email Marketing Success

In a world where we're constantly told to create content, optimize funnels, and chase the algorithm, it’s easy to forget what actually builds a sustainable business: trust.
And trust starts with connection.
That’s why email marketing is still the most powerful tool in any business—not because it’s automated, or scalable, or high-converting (though it can be all of those things)—but because it gives you a direct line to your audience. A space where connection comes first. Where real stories resonate more than polished messaging.
And the biggest lesson I’ve learned about connection didn’t come from a marketing course.
It came from my grandmother.
My Grandmother, and the Story I Never Thought I’d Share
Margarete Leopoldina Gsur was born in Langenzersdorf, Austria, just north of Vienna. In 1957, her cousin Kurt brought home an American soldier named Gerald—nicknamed Jim—for a holiday weekend. They fell in love, moved to Germany, had a daughter named Sue, and eventually immigrated to the United States, where they raised two more children, Maria and John—my dad.
Growing up, I wasn’t particularly close to her. In fact, I was a little afraid of her. She was blunt and intense, never sugar-coated anything, and didn’t offer the kind of soft grandmothering I saw in movies or friends’ families. I remember excitedly telling her I was reading Aschenputtel in my German college course, and without missing a beat, she snapped, “It’s AAschenpUHttel”—clearly annoyed at my pronunciation. Another time, my cousin proudly told her, “Grandma, I got all A’s my first semester!”
She replied, “Try taking a class you don’t like and see how you do.”
It felt like there was always a wall between us—emotional, energetic, cultural.
And yet, after she passed away in 2016, something unexpected happened: I began to feel more connected to her than ever before.
The Connection That Grew After She Was Gone
I didn’t plan for this to happen. But she started showing up—in small, strange, and significant ways. When I’d get stuck in my work, I’d suddenly smell cigarette smoke, even though no one nearby smoked. I’d hear her voice in my mind. I’d feel her presence—her guidance, her opinion, her pride.
Over time, I started to understand her in ways I never could when she was alive. She was a German-speaking immigrant in post-WWII America—an environment that wasn’t exactly welcoming. She had been mistreated by her own mother-in-law. She had her own Aschenputtel story long before I ever read the fairy tale.
Working with Austrian and German clients in my own business has only deepened that understanding. What I once thought was a "Margarete thing"—the bluntness, the precision, the sharp edges—I now see as cultural norms shaped by history and hardship.
The Lesson That Changed How I Show Up in Business
What I’ve come to learn through this connection is that we all build walls. Life gives us reasons—disappointments, expectations, pressure—to protect ourselves, to perform, to become who we think we should be. But those same walls often keep us from what we crave most: real connection.
And if you're anything like me, surface-level conversations—especially in business—just don’t cut it. We want depth. We want truth. We want to feel something real.
Which brings me back to email marketing.
Why Email Still Works, Even in a Social-First World
In a digital landscape where most platforms reward performance, polish, and trend-chasing, email offers something different. It gives you space to show up fully as yourself.
Not just as a marketer or a business owner—but as a human.
That’s why email works. Because it builds real connection. Your subscribers don’t just hear from you—they feel you. They start to see themselves in your story. They trust you, not just your advice. And that trust becomes the foundation for everything else—community, sales, loyalty, longevity.
It's not about having the perfect subject line or mastering conversion copy. It’s not about hacking your funnel or using the latest framework. It’s about telling the truth. Being who you are. And letting your audience see behind the curtain.
Because what actually drives sales isn’t tactics—it’s trust.
The Real Secret to Connection and Conversion
What turns readers into clients isn’t the formula. It’s the feeling. It’s the willingness to share the story you didn’t think belonged in your business. It’s the moment you drop the performance and start a real conversation. That’s what lands. That’s what lasts.
And if you're tired of shouting into the void on social media, or second-guessing every piece of content you put out there...
If you’re ready to create a marketing strategy that reflects who you really are — while still getting results — I’d love to support you.
